Andrew Furniss

Concert Organist, Accompanist, Teacher, Composer and Examiner

Andrew Furniss is a concert organist, teacher and examiner. Andrew’s performances as an organist have been praised for the carefully selected programmes as well as the colourful registrations used.

Each of his organ programmes are not only tailored for each instrument but are also carefully considered to link with an underlying theme or some historical trait connected with the venue itself. The inventive and creative registrations selected by Andrew are either to produce a historically accurate sound or to showcase the different colours possible on the instrument.

Biography

Inspired by hearing the organ during daily services as a Worcester Cathedral chorister, Andrew initially began studying the organ with Daniel Moult at Coventry Cathedral. In 2004, Andrew attained two Organ Scholarships; firstly at Sheffield Cathedral (2004-5) and subsequently at Oriel College, Oxford (2005-2008).

Whilst at Sheffield Cathedral, Andrew continued to study the organ with Neil Taylor and was very active as a recitalist and accompanist. In addition to assisting at the cathedral, he took part in performances organised by Sheffield University including Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, organised and directed by Andrew Lawrence-King.

At Oxford, Andrew continued his studies on the organ, specialising in French and German repertoire with guidance from specialists including David Sanger, Jacques van Oortmerssen and David Briggs. At the same time as studying for his music degree at Oxford and achieving his Associateship of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO), Andrew was very much in demand as an accompanist and recitalist, both in the UK and abroad on tour with various Oxford College Chapel Choirs. As Organ Scholar at Oriel College Andrew accompanied the choir and directed the choral singers throughout the weekly services. Andrew directed and recorded a CD of both choral and organ music with the Oriel Chapel Choir and arranged summer choir tours to France, Poland and the United States where he conducted and accompanied the choir during church services and concerts.

Upon the completion of his degree, Andrew became the Director of Music at the Oxford University Catholic Chaplaincy in addition to the College Organist at Hertford College, Oxford where he assisted as an accompanist and informal tutor to the organ scholars. Currently Andrew holds the position of Assistant Director of Music at Methodist Central Hall, Westminster under the direction of Gerard Brooks where he gained the Fellowship diploma of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO) in 2016. In this capacity Andrew performs regular services as well as annual radio broadcasts and more recently a recording for BBC television. In addition to his duties at Central Hall Andrew has played as a soloist in different ensembles around London including a performance of the Saint-Saëns Organ Symphony with the Oberon Orchestra. Besides Andrew’s busy schedule as a recitalist and accompanist, Andrew also teaches at the John Lyon School, Harrow as well as acting as an examiner for two examination boards.
